Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, this bulletproof dog vest is designed the velcro adjustments, straps, and clips to account for many sizes and types of canines. The manufacture includes a form to fill out the measurements of your dog so you can be sure the K-9 Shadow Vest will fit your K-9 companion perfectly.

As this vest is lighter than other ballistic vests for dogs, there should be less of a problem of your canine overheating. However, it is important to consider the 4lbs weight of the vest against the size and weight of your specific dog. The closer in weight the dog and vest are, the harder the dog will need to work to maneuver while wearing the K-9 Shadow Vest, which means it will overheat faster.

The K-9 Shadow Vest is certified in accordance with Type IIIA ballistics by the National Institute of Justice. This means the K-9 Shadow Vest is rated to be able to stop Magnum rounds fired from handguns and everything from a .38 Special to a 9mm. There are still a few types of rifle rounds that can penetrate this particular vest.

National Institute of Justice Level IIIA ballistics can protect from some amount of slash and stab damage from edged weapons, but they are not recommended if this is the type of damage primarily expected. Vital organs can be protected from kicks and other blows, but there is always a risk with impact trauma to vital organs no matter the type of ballistics protectino used.

Benefits and Importance of a Canine Bulletproof Vest

Dogs that are subjected to situations where they will be around various types of weaponry and other dangerous situations should be equipped with as much protection as possible.

Many of these canines have been trained to resist their urge to flee in the face of danger, putting them in harm’s way and often squaring off against weapons and adversaries that they may not be at all equipped to handle naturally.

Bulletproof vests provide the chance for dogs to serve their owners and coworkers without putting themselves at unnecessary risk of death or serious injury. Whether a dog is rushing in to take down an assailant at home, chasing down prey out on a hunt, or being sent in to handle inmates at a correctional facility the K-9 Shadow Vest can protect your K-9 companions even when things take a turn for the worse.

When Should You Consider a Bulletproof Dog Vest?

While in most instances there is little need for a dog to be put into situations where they might be shot at, stabbed, or otherwise attacked, there are certain instances where this risk increases drastically. For these situations and professions, it is highly recommended that dogs be equipped with some type of bulletproof vest.

  • Obviously, K-9 units and police dogs are at the top of this list and most often use bulletproof vests

  • First responders in high crime-rate areas

  • Dogs used as part of Search and Rescue teams with falling debris, hazardous terrain (like glass and metal shards – a fallen building, for example)

  • Hunting dogs who will be chasing down prey that is being shot at or trapping prey to be shot when cornered

  • Dogs that serve as security measures for private and professional residences

  • Dogs working with inmates or in other situations where they work closely with inmates

  • Dogs serving in violent crime communities in various capacities

Great vest, great price.

I raised some money to buy a K-9 bulletproof vest for the police dogs in my city. I run a pet shop and I raised the money by putting a water jug on the counter of the shop. People put all sorts of money in it. Dollar bills, coins, someone even put a $5. When it got pretty full I took it to the bank (they handled it for free because I’m a customer so I didn’t have to pay Coinstar). I ended up with $944. I then used the money and a little of my own to buy TWO vests. Other companies I would have only been able to afford one, but this vest was priced right. We had a big ceremony and our picture was in the local paper. I highly reccomend doing this for the police dogs in your town too.
